We divide our fire-retardant racing suits into two categories. - aramid and treated cotton. Treated cotton is almost sefl-explanatory. The suit’s fabric has been chemically treated with a fire-retardant liquid. Aramid is a suit whose fabrics have been woven with varying percentages of aromatic fibers.
Aromatic fibers offer multiple advantages to the auto sports industries. The list includes : high strength, low flammability, light weight, good resistance to organic solvents and abrasion. It is also a synthetic material so its characteristics are inherent and (unlike treated cotton) they cannot be washed out. But the material comes at a price.
The Nomex® trade name is owned by DuPont, but there are other aramid, patented brand names including Kevlar, Technora, Twaron and Heracron.

Bell Racing told us about this new brand at the 2018 PRI trade show. They made it clear that the B2 was a separate and independant company - and it is - sort of. The B2 is manufactured by Head Protection Technologies LL, which offers head protection for multiple industries. However, they share the same Champaign, llinois location as Bell Racing and (more importantly) the helmets are manufactured using Bell’s head forms.
B2 offers 3 models; the Icon (open faced) $199; the Vision (closed faced) $279; the Apex (closed-face with chin spoiler) $299.
Our first take on these helps light and affordable.

This is a great story and why we love the NASA Great Lakes Community.
Nolan is almost a rookie licensed racer, and he almost did not get to the 2019 Championships. The car was not finished - and then it was, just allowing Nolan to fulfill all registration requirements. However, lack of funds prevented Nolan from registering for Mid-Ohio. That’s when his NASA friends took action. They ‘Gofundedme’ the operation for him, with others offering their help, equipment, parts and more.
At MId-Ohio the car had issues (like so many) - but once again, help arrived from all directions - and Nolan smart-raced to the ST6 win!
Most protective clothing will continue to be manuufactured to the FIA 8856-2000 standard. This new standard is incrementally being mandated on the international racing series. The major change is a 20% increase in the fabrics fire resistancy. We suspect this will soon become the manufacturing standard for all protective clothing.
Tags tell tech inspectors that your apparel is compliant. No SFI or FIA tag on your socks, you are not going to pass tech.
