We only stock and list 100% aramid (fire-retardant) fabric suits. Aramid fabric is woven with fire-retardant (aramid) fibers. Suit fabric that has a greater density of high quality aramid fiber will produce a suit that is lighter, more flame retardant, but also more expensive. The less expensive suits will be woven with a mixture of an aramid fiber and other fibers, usually a natural fiber such as cotton. This does increase the weight of the fabric and decrease the suits fire retardancy. As a result these suits will add extra layers (increased weight) in order to obtain the appropriate FIA and SFI certifications.

Aramid definition - any of a class of synthetic aromatic long chain polyamides capable of extrusion into fibers having resistance to high temperatures and great strength. Nomex®, Kevlar® and carbon fiber are  aramid fibers.

Entry level, budget priced suits are different. They gain their fire-resistance (and certification) by being dipped into a fire-retardant liquid. These suits do lose their fire retardancy through wear and with every wash. 25 washes is the recommended maximum number of washes before the suit needs to be replace. These suits are also heavier, since to gain certification, they need extra layers. Aramid fabric suits do not have this problem, and if probably worn/maintained/cleaned will only need replacing once damaged. We find this more cost-effective and why we only list this type of suit.

The suits can be SFI and/or FIA approved. In USA for most road-race sanctioning bodies the suits have no end-date.

Note SFI 3.2A/1 or  SFI 3.2A/5 never refers to the number of layers a suit has, instead defines its TPP (Thermal Protection Performance) rating. The TPP rating measures the length of time the person wearing the garment can be exposed to a heat source (direct flame or radiant heat) before incurring a 2nd degree burn. There are several SFI 3.2A ratings for drivers suits - the number reflects the TPP protection.

For example:

SFI 3.2A/1— TPP 6  (3 sec before 2nd degree burn.)
SF1 3.2/A5—TPP 19 (10 sec before 2nd degree burn.)

Note: adding air pockets and layers increases the TPP. Hence manufacturer's use of quilted designs and our strong recommendation that the suit is worn with fire-retardant underwear.
